Episode 121, part 2.Guests: Lee Seung Gi, Park Shin Hye.
Location: Seoul (Mapo-gu vicinity).
Clue acquisition race: Go to as many of five mission locations within the given time period and obtain clues for the final mission. Apparently some locations only give the clue to the first two people, and some have no limit (it's not clear what the rules are). Mission rule (revealed later in the episode): clues can be shared with other members, but only the person who won the clue can actually see it (Sangam-dong street*: find the informant at the other end of the street; Mongwon market*: find the 7 informants using the musical password to obtain the whole clue; China House*: compete with the PD to find the most pairs of matching picture cards; Hongdae stairs*: find the clue in the neighborhood; Song Dam loach soup restaurant*: find the car key in the loach tank that opens the car outside).
Final mission (Prism Tower*): Use the obtained clues and find new clues to figure out the passcode to prevent a bomb from going off and save the gold. 007 mission commences: find and eliminate the villain who is trying to blow up the gold, figure out the passcode and save the gold. Villain (spy) missions commence: eliminate the 00 agents and . . . figure out the passcode and steal the gold . . . that the villain is trying to blow up.
Comments: Production team back to contriving complicated "plots" which complicate or confuse (sometimes subvert) the original Running Man ethos of completing missions and competing to win. Anyway, the "plot" ends up contradicting itself and is just distracting (if the plot was followed, the final episode conclusion should have been different).
- The celebrities on the picture card matching game were all previous guests on Running Man (Ji Hyo was originally a guest). The episode with MBLAQ that Jong Kook mentions was ep. 95. Curious: Gwang Soo is unable to accomplish any of the clue obtaining missions and is not shown to have even reached any mission location, and he was immediately and unceremoniously eliminated at the final destination (yes, that's a spoiler, but doesn't really spoil anything because his lack of involvement is just more curious than anything else). The only thing more ridiculous than anyone being able to figure out the design of the passcode is Gary claiming to have figured it out. Gary? Really? Gary didn't even get the hint that was relevant to it. Still, they filmed how he might plausibly have figured it out, so I can't say it's not plausible. But barely.
- In general, the episode looks like it was an editing nightmare and a lot is edited out so it's not clear how who got what information. Giving benefit of doubt and ignoring the "plot" element, it's more or less a straight-forward episode.
- epdrama's subtitles are much better than kshownow for this episode. I think I'll start pointing out which has the better subtitles. epdrama's English is generally better but sometimes they make incomprehensible, brow furrowing mistakes (i.e., instead of using the well-established English rendering of Max Chang Min's stage name, they apparently translated it literally and called him something like Strong Chang Min). As for kshownow, I don't think there's a single native English speaker on their team. Competent, fluent even, but definitely not native (and that's not a dis as I appreciate their work).
